HOW MANY ENGLISH WORDS DO I NEED TO LEARN?

Children will have a larger vocabulary as they learn more English. When they hear words that they understand, but do not yet know how to use, this is called their passive vocabulary. In comparison, the words that a child can use at anytime is called their active vocabulary. Over time with more studying, some of the passive vocabulary will slowly become their active vocabulary.

While there are many opinions on how many vocabulary words are really needed at each level, some people have estimated that a child at the CEFR A1 level will need to have an active vocab or 300 words and a passive vocab of 600 words. With each increasing level, the amount of vocabulary needed will double.

HOW MANY HOURS OF ENGLISH DO I NEED?

There are six levels of English to learn based on the CEFR (Common European Framework Reference for Languages). The easiest level is A1, and the hardest level is C2. Although every student is different, it normally takes 90 to 100 hours of studying English to get to the A1 Beginner level. To get from A1 to the A2 Elementary level, it will take another 90 to 100 hours. That means it will take a new student a total of 180 to 200 hours to get from not knowing English to reaching the A2 level.

One way parents can help younger children is to begin learning English is to start a reading program at home. For example, to get the A1 level, the children’s books are more easy and normally take 3 to 5 minutes to read one. So ask your child to read 3 books every day, and that should about 10 minutes of reading. This will add up to 100 hours of reading in 2 years time. The A2 level will require harder books, so begin choosing a new selection of books that is right for your child. The road to English success begins with one step!
